About a month after I miscarried, I got a bill in the mail. I had grabbed the mail on my way to pick my kids up from school and thrown it into the front seat, knowing I’d have a few minutes before they walked out to sort through it. As I sat parked in the school lot, my heart sank when I realized that I was holding a bill from the doctor’s office.
No, no, no.
It’s hard to put into words what seeing that bill, ultrasounds and testing listed, right there in black and white, with money I owed for a baby I didn’t get to keep, felt like. It’s even harder to put into words the enormous financial hardship that miscarriage and infant loss can have on families. Even with insurance, miscarriage can cost thousands and thousands of dollars. And that’s just the financial impact, not to mention the devastating emotional trauma that trying to pay those bills — or not having the funds to pay those medical bills — can have on a woman trying to heal.
That’s where the Stay Strong Mom Fund comes in. It’s our goal to raise money, through Stay Strong Mom boxes and mugs, for the Stay Strong Mom Fund, which will give back to mothers and families in need of financial assistance for miscarriage and infant loss hospital bills.
